At Carousel Horse Farm we have the perfect one hour trail ride on our own land that is surrounded by no hunting zones and woods that lead to the village. Our land is also open onto Leach Hill which overlooks the Juggtown Forest and the Canadian Pipeline so we are looking over the hill and down an open field to the hunting grounds. Far away from any danger, hunters or stray bullets we feel perfectly safe riding during hunting season.
One of the great benefits of being on a protected alcove of land at the edge of a popular hunting ground, is that we often see deer and other wildlife taking refuge during the day in our hardwood forest and pine grove. Coyotes follow the prey animals up into the field so we even get to see them in the open areas from time to time in the mornings.
Even though we are in a safe zone when riding on our beginner trail we still wear orange and other bright colors. Orange is the best color for hunting season. But bright red, yellow or blue can be helpful too. We have some orange helmet covers, an orange vest for the guide and even an orange vest for one of the horses! We also carry jingle bells so that anyone in the woods knows there are people or pets in our direct while they are in the woods.
There is still no hunting on Sundays in Maine. So Sunday is the only day during November that we offer our 2 hr rides. Just to be safe we still wear our blaze orange and bring bells to alert hunters that we are in the area.
